19th Century Austrian Seated Ceramic Pug Dog with Red Collar and Glass Eyes
About the Item
I found this very lovely Austrian cold painted terracotta model of a Pug Dogie in seated position with little red collar adorned with gold painted studs and ring, from late 19th century and immediately thought of it probably looking great with my earlier find; the Henriette Ronner dog painting. And it does!
Or for that matter, with the 18th century oak cartouche shaped box, as the perfect base for this little fellow.
Pugs were and are a very popular breeed, they were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century and were popularised in Western Europe by the House of Orange of the Netherlands, and the House of Stuart.
In the United Kingdom, in the nineteenth century, Queen Victoria developed a passion for pugs which she passed on to other members of the Royal family.
Nice decorative collectors item in very realistic and naturalistically cold painted terracotta with inset glass eyes.
A very cute find, don't you think.
