Art Deco Jardiniere/Vase with Fern Tendril Motif by Sevres, Blue-Green & Brown

About the Item

Created only a year after the famed Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts), which brought the world to Paris in 1925 to see the exciting new, modern style we now call Art Deco, this striking jardiniere or rounded vase was designed by Maurice Gensoli for the Sevres porcelain works in France. Gensoli uses a repeated pattern of fern tendril motifs -- executed in a deep blue-green glaze on a ground of ruddy brown and ivory -- to create a geometric pattern that beautifully captures the elegance and symmetry of the Art Deco style. Gensoli did a number of pieces for Sevres, this being among the largest and most impressive; many leading artists of the day worked with the Sevres company in the 1920s and 30s, producing Art Deco ware of the highest quality.
