"Hercules and the Erymanthian Boar, " Fabulous Art Deco Footed Bowl/Centerpiece

About the Item

A fabulous example of cased, wheel-cut glass from the height of the Art Deco period, this large footed bowl or centerpiece features large scenes of Hercules subduing the Erymanthian boar, the fourth of the celebrated Labors of Hercules. The figure of Hercules is shown nude, his cloak flowing behind him as he presses down on the neck of the boar. Hercules drove the exhausted animal into deep snow, trapped it, bound it in chains, and took it alive to Eurystheus, who was amazed and overwhelmed by Hercules' accomplishment. Here, the figures of man and boar are expressed in a deep ruby glass, which overlays the pale gold glass beneath, and was wheel-cut to create the scene. Though it is not signed, this is clearly a French piece produced by one of the great artisans of the 1920s.
