"Leaping Gazelles, " Rare Pair of Art Deco Porcelain Plates by Waylande Gregory
About the Item
Gorgeously glazed in tones of warm grey (almost taupe), white and mirrored gold, this rare and stunning pair of plates depict leaping gazelles, a favorite motif of artists in the Art Deco era. The artist was Waylande Gregory, who was prodigious and indefatigable over a long career. Gregory produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. One remarkable example is a fountain sculpture -- "Light Dispelling Darkness" -- in Roosevelt Park in Edison, New Jersey, which has recently been restored.
