Soriana Limited Edition Denim Armchair by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina. A design armchair with soft, generous contours, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in the 1960s to bring home casual comfort, is swathed in premium Japanese denim, in a limited edition that elevates its unconventional spirit. The denim is processed to make it soft and comfortable. A special treatment lends it the typical faded look of worn jeans. The metal structure holds the armchair in a vise-like grip, creating several different contemporary colour pairings. The denim version of Soriana maintains the same sustainable approach as its namesake and comes with circular materials for both the structure and the padding. Even the denim is processed in an eco-friendly manner, limiting the use of water. The idea for this armchair that changed the face of upholstered furniture belongs to Afra and Tobia Scarpa, who designed it in 1969, starting with the new possibilities offered by the forming of polyurethane foam to create an unconventional look of leisure. With a vise-like grip, the metal structure holds the armchair, with its biodegradable internal padding that, for the first time ever, needs no internal support, intensifying the comfort level of this upholstered chair in the most freeing sense of the word. He has since been awarded many other design prizes and many of his designs can also be found on show in some of the world’s key museums, including his ‘Libertà’ chair on show at the Louvre.As an architect he has worked for both public and private clients including the Benetton Group for whom he famously designed the industrial area and production plants in Castrette di Villorba (Treviso). Even today, the Benetton facilities are still held up as an example of aesthetic-functional excellence, one of the world’s most exciting pieces of industrial architecture. About the manufacturer: In a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, Cassina has created the I Maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the 20th century’s best-known architects, including Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Franco Albini, Frank Lloyd Wright and Marco Zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. Furniture manufacturer Cassina is a prolific design house for more reasons than one: It not only owns the licenses to an exquisite collection of iconic chairs, sofas, tables and other pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries but also produces original works that are characterized by innovation and the finest Italian craftsmanship.

Cassina’s illustrious legacy includes being one of the first companies to bring industrial design to Italy in the 1950s. Founded in 1927 in Meda, Italy, by brothers Cesare and Umberto Cassina, the Italian manufacturing giant originally specialized in bespoke woodworking. In nearly a century since its founding, the company has shown incredible foresight about design trends and the evolution of technology.

In 1964, Cassina signed an exclusive licensing agreement to manufacture furniture by Le Corbusier and his collaborators — such as the LC4 chaise longue made with trailblazing French modernist Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret — a move that would shape the future of the company. Cassina’s I Maestri collection is an ongoing initiative to restyle landmark designs from the 20th century, such as pieces by Gerrit Rietveld (the Red and Blue armchair from 1918), Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Erik Gunnar Asplund, Franco Albini and Frank Lloyd Wright. In 2014, the company became part of Haworth in its acquisition of Italian furniture group Poltrona Frau, and in 2015, Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola joined Cassina as its art director, leading the brand into its next century of inventive style.
