About the Item
Atmospheric and full of depth, this view of an old European archway, with high-chimneyed houses beyond and crowds of people below, was painted in the 1930s by J. Alvin Storck, a Chicago artist best known for his mid century paintings. The artist used watercolor here, giving him the ability to capture the deep, shadowed areas below the arch, as well as the lovely translucent colors of the scene beyond. Stock studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, and may have painted this scene as a student traveling through Europe. (Dimensions include matte and frame; image area is 10.5 inches high by 7 inches wide.)
