"Lying on the Sand, " WPA-Era Atmospheric Beach Scene with Male & Female Bathers

About the Item

In an era when Reginald Marsh, Paul Cadmus and many other painters loved to capture the joy and energy of crowded beach scenes in America, John Winters created this lovely genre scene of a male bather in his one-piece swim suit reposing on the sand (probably the Lincoln Park beach in Chicago), watching clusters of other bathers in lively conversation. Winters was an integral part of the Chicago art scene in the 1930s and 1940s, and was the administrator for the WPA Illinois Art Project for several years. He painted murals, such as “Lincoln at New Salem” in the Petersburg, Illinois post office, and later moved to the Philadelphia area to serve as the chief artist and display director for the famed John Wanamaker department store. This painting is strongly reminiscent of the murals and paintings of the WPA period, which focused on work and everyday life in America. The medium is casein on Masonite; the original frame is retained. (Dimensions include the frame; the painted image is 5.25 inches high by 9.5 inches wide.)
