About the Item
W.E. Henley, illustrated by William Nicholson
London Types.
London, William Heinemann, 1898.
Publisher's device to title, 12 full-page colour lithographed illustrations by Nicholson; publisher's variant binding vellum-backed pictorial vellum boards
The rare special issue of Nicholson's London Types, in a rarer variant vellum binding with leather spine. Printed on Japanese vellum.
The Bus Driver was omitted from this edition and only appears in a simplified form on the front cover. The London types featuring in this edition are Guardsman (The Horse Guards), Hawker (Kensington), Beef-Eater (The Tower), Sandwich-Man (Trafalgar Square), Coster (Hammersmith), Lady (Rotten Row), Bluecoat Boy (Newgate Street), Policeman (Constitution Hill), News-Boy (The City), Drum-Major (Wimbledon Common), Flower Girl (Any Corner), and a Barmaid (Any Bar).
Nicholson had been working with Heinemann since the mid-1890s. As well as designing their windmill device, Nicholson created a number of books for Heinemann, including An Almanac of twelve Sports (1898) and The Square Book of Animals (1899). The accompanying 'Quatorzains' in this work are by the poet, critic & literary editor W.E. Henley, best remembered today for his poetic evocation of Victorian stoicism 'Invictus', written in 1875.
The limited 'Library Edition' published in an edition of 275 copies, this of even greater scarcity due to the vellum binding.
Binding a little stained and minor bumping to outer corners. Binding rubbed, ends worn with some splitting to foot (ca 2cm). Internally fine. Endpapers a little age toned.

William Nicholson
William Nicholson was a British painter of still-life, landscape and portraits. He was probably best known through his graphic works, as a book designer and illustrator. Nicholson was greatly encouraged in his landscapes by Whistler from about 1900. In 1902–03, he produced a series of watercolor, chalk and pen drawings of Oxford, which were published in 1905 by the Stafford Gallery as two portfolios of lithographs with descriptions by Arthur Waugh – father of Evelyn Waugh. With Stafford Gallery blindstamps and Nicholson’s signature, these dramatic works of Oxford show Nicholson’s interest in the effects of light and shade on the city’s architecture.

Folio Portraits of Artists, Puligo, Fiesole, Rossi, Gallo, Cosimo
By Giovanni Battista Falda
Located in Norwich, GB
Fine folio including early and finely executed portraits of Renaissance artists by Joachim von Sandrart.
Included are portraits of:
Mino da Fiesole;
Giuliano da Sangallo;
Domenico Puligo;
Andrea da Fiesole, and
Properzia de' Rossi.
The latter is of particular historical significance in that Properzia de' Rossi (c. 1490 Bologna – 1530 Bologna) was a ground-breaking female Italian Renaissance sculptor, the only woman to receive a biography in Vasari's Lives of the Artists. According to Vasari, she taught herself to carve by working with peach-stones. At the end of her life, she was sought out by the Pope Clement VII, who unfortunately found her dead.
Sometimes referred to as the “German Vasari,” Joachim von Sandrart, born in Frankfurt, trained first as a printmaker, notably in Nuremberg, and in Prague with Aegidius Sadeler. He then studied painting from 1625 on, originally in the studio of Gerrit van Honthorst...
