About the Item

1965 custom Archie Eason turban hat designed for Betty Foy Sanders, former First Lady of Georgia. Mr. Eason was originally from Georgia and started his career as a milliner in the 1950’s creating unusual and one-of-kind hats for a Florida Department store soon thereafter taking his talents and knack for innovative designs to New York. His hats are often recognized by a single green sequin on the brim ... symbol of a unique style. This peach velvet hat adorned with crystal beading and lined in green satin (to match the signature sequin) was created and presented to Mrs. Sanders at a fashion show which took place in Sea Island Georgia during the 1965 Southern Governor's Conference hosted by then First Lady Sanders and her husband, Governor Carl Sanders. By using a lovely shade of peach to create his design, Mr. Eason was undoubtedly paying tribute to Georgia's popular nickname, 'The Peach State'. It can be worn with exaggerated height as shown in the first few photographs or folded down for a more subdued look as shown in photographs 9 and 10. From the estate of Betty Foy Sanders, not only former first lady of Georgia, but also a well known artist and active philanthropist. In addition to her artistic talents, Ms. Sanders was known for her unique and fashion forward sense of style including her love of hats which earned her a recognition from the National Millinery Institute. A copy of her 2002 memoir, The Artist Within, is included. This hat and its provenance is described on page 106 of the book. A unique find from an exceptional milliner! CONDITION Good to fair condition with some missing beads and wear to the velvet as shown in photographs 2, 3 and 7. The condition issues appear to be from improper storage rather than real wear. No original packaging. MEASUREMENTS The inner rim measures 22". The crown has a 10.25" rise.
