Black Velvet Bubble Veil Clamshell Saucer Hat with Provenance – O/S, 1930s

About the Item

From the estate of French heiress (and sister of WWI aviation hero and French Open namesake Roland Garros) Gilberte Garros, this magnificent saucer hat combines the 1930s’ penchant for outrageous millinery and the exoticism of Tunisia, where the heiress lived much of her adult life. A showstopper of an accessory with a fascinating life history. Oversized saucer hat with clamshell ripples at front edge and twill piping around circumference; foldover bubble veil from ear to ear and rear twill flat bow spanning the full width of hat. Flat crown lined in cotton mesh; grosgrain sweatband and elastic keeper cord. material: cotton velvet, cotton twill, straw body noteworthy: loosen dirt with baby toothbrush or compressed air repairs: replaced veiling and elastic keeper cord condition: very good – excellent with extremely light edge wear to inner edge of decorative bow (hidden by upturned rear hat edge) measurements: saucer: 15” ear to ear, 12” front to back crown diameter: 5” crown circumference: 17 ½” exterior circumference: 41” crown height: flat veil: 3” at widest keeper cord: 13” unstretched label: HELN (Place du 7 Mai, Tunis) size: no size tag present ; comparable to one size fits most due to placement perched on head
