c1968-1970 Pierre Cardin Haute Couture Purple Guipure Dress

About

There is a certain silhouette that is closely associated with Pierre Cardin and although I love the look that instantly flashes into mind when you think of Cardin, he was actually a talented designer that had a huge range. This Haute Couture dress by Cardin is from the estate of Baronessde Alain nee Mary Chauvin du Treuil and it was made for her during the period of 1968-1970. It is a beautiful and elegant piece that may not be as 'mod' in feel as some of his other peices during this time period but shows the breadth of his talent and the restraint in line that he was capable of. The dress is made from a hand made guipure lace - a heavy lace consisting of embroidered motifs held together by large connecting stitches - that changes in both color and textures as it travels from shoulder to hem. The color changes in bands from a pale lavender at the top to the deep eggplant at the hem and a color somewhere in the middle between the two. The lace also changes with a lighter, more open feel at the top and it gets gradually denser as it reached the bottom. The shape is simple with just a nod to shape through the waist. It is lined in a high end oink silk that peeks through the outer lace layer. I love the wide cut sleeves and how they are finished following the pattern of the lace. It is a dress that may seem unremarkable on a hanger but transforms into a very chic and elegant piece once on the body. Excellent condition Fully lined in a pink silk and closes with a hand set back painted metal zipper. Hand set lining, hand made lace and entirely done by hand as per the definition of Haute Couture. About Pierre Cardin (Manufacturer)

Best known for creating groundbreaking fashion designs from the 1950s onward, Pierre Cardin has enjoyed great success in other design fields, most notably furniture. Cardin’s chairs, cabinets, tables and other pieces share many of the keynotes of his clothing designs. They are simple, geometric, elegant and cool.

Cardin was born in a village near Venice, Italy, and raised in central France. Always interested in fashion, he left home at age 17 to train with a Vichy tailor. After the end of World War II, Cardin moved to Paris and worked for a succession of couture houses, before taking a job with Christian Dior in 1946. Cardin went solo in 1950, and quickly won attention for his novel style. Unlike Dior’s famous New Look, Cardin’s clothes de-emphasized a woman’s curves; his breakthrough pieces like the Bubble dress had, instead, a sculptural quality. In the following decade, Cardin introduced bright tunic dresses and shifts, marketed as the Space Age look and accessorized with vinyl hats and visors.

In the 1970s Cardin expanded his design work into furniture, jewelry and automobiles. (Later, licensing agreements would put Cardin’s name on goods ranging from perfume to sunglasses.) Cardin’s furniture pieces — inspired, perhaps, by the rediscovery of Art Deco design in that decade — feature simple, symmetrical forms, lacquer and figured veneer finishes, and accents in metals such as aluminum and brass. Whether you are looking for a vintage cocktail dress or a chest of drawers to keep it in, as you will see from these pages, Pierre Cardin offers an option in either that is timelessly chic.
