Sapphire Silk Mother Ginger Halter Ball Gown w Pannier Hoop Skirt - XXS, 1950s

About the Item

Worn by a well-to-do young Parisian at her debutante ball, which included a pre-party on a Seine-docked yacht. The convertible halter neck adds real-world practicality, but the jaw-dropping changeante color and Elizabethan-style skirt elevate this gown to the realm of myth. Vintage halter neck evening gown with petal bustline and flexible boning at front and rear bodice. Massive full skirt with double self cords at mid-thigh, creating a flexible exterior hoop effect and substantial fullness even without a petticoat. Micro pintucks around full circumference of skirt beneath lowermost cord; side metal zipper closure with top hook and eye. Halter neck strap may be tucked inside for strapless styling; unlined. fabric: changeante silk taffeta noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: replaced bodice boning, reinforced seams where necessary and rehemmed condition: very good with light seam strain at side zipper measurements: bust: 31” underbust/ribcage: 23” waist: 25” bodice length: 10” from underarm hips: free exterior hoop circumference: 137” skirt length: 38” total length: 48” from underarm sweep: 270” (22 ½ feet!) label: no label present size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size extra small

Sheer Indian Black Silk and Gold Bead Kaftan Coat - M-L, 1980s

Halfway between a kaftan and a maxi coat, this sheer topper makes up in glamour what it lacks in warmth. The repeating floral pattern consists of clear bugle beads that catch and reflect light, while the hollow gold balls at each flower's center create evening-worthy shimmer. This single garment has the power to elevate the humblest outfit and would be a perfect travel or resort piece; it could even be worn as a bathing suit cover up! Collarless sheer beaded kaftan...

Dignified and statuesque, this gown combines the modesty and rigor of a kimono with the body conscious glamour of the 1930s. The high cut asymmetrical bodice and inset obi waist detail keep it demure, but the fluttering batwing sleeves—dripping with tambour beading and Austrian crystals—are the real show-stoppers.
