The gown is stunningly beautiful. The construction is wonderful and the dress has a beautiful elegance to it. The velvet is used as an accent and as a back drop for the intricate, hand-done sequin work that covers it. It becomes an element of the overall design and an element of the beautiful mixture of textures rather then the predominant fabric. The top is made from a sheer black silk chiffon that has been backed in a nude silk. The sleeves are left unlined so you get a real sense of sheerness. The hand applied sequins trail up from the waist in a beautiful design that covers the bodice. Each sleeve is finished a dramatic glossy black feather cuff. I love the contrast and play of the different textures paired with the pure high glamour of the sequins and feathers. It is gorgeous and finished with lots of high end construction details. Excellent condition
Fully lined in a nude silk chiffon through the bodice and a black rayon through the skirt. The sleeves are left unlined. It closes at the back with a hand set, painted metal zipper. Lots of hand finishing and the feathers are in excellent condition. Note that there is also a wide silk satin belt that goes with this gown. We missed it while photoing but it will be shipped with the dress. It is similar to the one seen in the museum reference photo. There is no evidence of this version ever having a feather collar and I suspect that it never did and was simply a slightly different model then the one held in the museum archives.

About Oscar De La Renta
Oscar de la Renta was not just a designer for the ages but a designer for women of all ages — from Hollywood starlets to silver-haired doyennes, from fashion icons (Sarah Jessica Parker) to iconic brides (Amal Alamuddin Clooney), from leading ladies of hip-hop (Nicki Minaj) to First Ladies of the United States (Jacqueline Kennedy all the way through to Michelle Obama). The secret to his broad and enduring appeal? “I have always thought that my role as a designer is to do the very best I can for a woman,” de la Renta told 1stdibs in a 2010 profile.
And for de la Renta, doing the very best meant making a woman feel beautiful, glamorous and full of confidence, whether she was walking down the red carpet or a crowded city street. "You carry the clothes, the clothes don't carry you," he went on to say in our story.
A perennial favorite on 1stdibs, Oscar de la Renta designs evolved over the years, as the large selection of items below attests, but whether bolero or ball gown, vintage or current, the pieces exude elegant sophistication and enduring originality — much like the man himself.
