Green Sari Silk and Gold Thread Hooded Kaftan w Provenance, Tunisia - M, 1970s

About the Item

Hand-made in Tunisia from an Indian silk sari, this kaftan was originally owned by the wife of a State Department ensign in the Nixon administration. Still not impressed? She wore it to tea with Prince Karim Aga Khan IV. That should do it. Tunisian-made hooded kaftan with ¾ bell sleeves; fully front buttoning with 99 gold hand-knotted looped buttons. Kaftan body fully lined in silk crêpe de chine; hood unlined. fabric: silk noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: invisibly mended one split in right underarm condition: excellent with above mentioned repair measurements: neckline circumference: 16” (buttoned to throat) shoulders: 15” sleeve: 22 ½” from shoulder, 11 ¼” from underarm sleeve circumference: 16” at upper arm, 27” at forearm bust: 38” waist: 28” hips: 36” length: 51” from shoulder; 42” from underarm sweep: 59” hood: 30” around x 19” deep label: no label present size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size medium
