About the Item

Norman Norell (1900-1972) is considered to be one of the original fashion designers of the modern American style. His sophisticated silhouettes were both tailored and timeless with an eye for high quality construction and materials. He gave French design houses a run for their money and influenced future American icons such as Bill Blass and Stephen Sprouse. His fans included first ladies, celebrities and professional women including Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, Lena Horne, Jacqueline Kennedy and Babe Paley, just to name a few. This black wool suit is from the 1968 Spring Collection and consists of a cropped jacket, maxi skirt and patent leather belt. The jacket and skirt are both embellished by large domed buttons. The skirt has a high waist and off-center button front with high slit. The jacket is lined in an ivory white satin and the skirt in black silk. Depending on accessories, this design could take on the look of an evening tuxedo with pussycat bow blouse or transform to a chic daytime look with boots and a turtle neck. It is a testament to Mr. Norell's classic designs that the suit is as stylish today as it was in the 1960's ... terrifically timeless! Labelled in the jacket and stamped to the back of the belt. There is also a label with model number in both pieces as shown in photograph 15. CONDITION Overall the suit is in very good condition and has been professionally cleaned. The lining of the jacket shows discolorations under the arms as shown in photograph 16 though there are no odors associated with the discolorations. The belt is in wearable condition but has seen better days and may not have been properly stored. It appears that the belt was original attached to the skirt waistband as there are loops on the underside of the belt and remnants of threading on the skirt waistband. SIZING & MEASUREMENTS The size is not marked though the suit best fits U.S. size 4 with attention to the following measurements. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4.
