Ancient Imperial China Ming Blue Female Equestrian Horse Rider, 1500

About the Item

Important ancient Imperial China Ming tomb sculpture of a female equestrian horse rider, 1368-1644, 14.5 inches in height. Crafted in stunning turquoise and cobalt blue color glazes. The lady and her steed is part of a small group of fine quality glazed figurines recently available from an old European collection and originally collected in Hong Kong in the 1990s. Look for other listings offering more important works from this fine collection. The pleasant faced equestrian woman is dressed in a tunic with long sleeves, her hand in front while seated erect in their horse' saddle and clutching a decorative glazed basket. The horse' standing four square and well decorated with bridle and ornaments of the period. The whole is beautifully glazed in stunning turquoise and cobalt blue colors - including highlights in original red and black cold painted pigments, a superior feature not often found on these works of art and representative of an important tomb which deserved highest quality pottery votive representations. The head is attachable as often seen on the largest figures from this period. Important large-scale sculptures such as this one were placed in tombs of the elite and wealthy as significant accompaniment in the afterlife. Female equestrians from the Ming period are genuinely rare, particularly in these blue colored glazes. Condition: Superb, completely original and intact with finely preserved glazes and pigments. Only one currently available from this collection. Dimension: 14.5 inches tall Provenance: Old European collection originally acquired in Hong Kong 1990s and legally imported into the USA.
