Antique Tibetan Telescopic Horn or Dungchen in Brass and Silver

About the Item

This stunning Tibetan telescopic horn or dungchen is from the late Qing Dynasty. The body is a warm brown that is smooth and adorned with chased and repoussé silvered metal details. It stands 15 inches when collapsed and 35.75 inches when extended. it measures 1.5 inches in diameter at the mouthpiece and 5" at the flared end. Each piece is expertly molded to fit into the next making it easy to secure in place when extending and release when collapsing, making it easy to travel with. Note the two rings at the flared end that are used for attaching a cord for carrying. Tibetan horns or dungchen are an important part of religious ceremonies in Buddist monastaries and are usually played in pairs or in an ensemble. Known for their low, mournful sound, some compare it to lowing cows or fog horns. This horn or dungchen is from the estate of widely travelled gentleman who was an avid collector of fine quality objet d'art, including various Chinese antiques.
