Group of Gandharan Carved Schist Sculptural Fragments, 3rd-5th Century
$6,500per set

About
An interesting group of sculptural fragments from the ancient Kingdom of Gandhara, circa 3rd-5th century.
The group consists of a triangular shaped fragment with an image of a monk holding up an offering. This image may represent the final scene in the Life of the Buddha, where his relics are dispersed.
The next fragment, looking somewhat like a modern grenade, is called a bumpa, and represents a vessel filled with wisdom. This fragment was originally part of a large image of the Bodhisattva Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future, who would hold this vessel in his hand. Parts of the fingers are still visible.
The last fragment is an elephant head, a lotus blossom clasped in its trunk. Elephants have long been associated with Buddhism. In fact, this image of an elephant holding a lotus blossom is directly related to a scene of the Life of the Buddha, known as the Dream of Queen Maya, and describes the Buddha's conception. In this story, Queen Maya, the Buddha's mother, dreams of a white elephant holding a lotus blossom. In her dream, the elephant circles her three times, then enters her womb. It is at that point the Buddha is conceived.
Gandhara was a Greco-Buddhist kingdom located in modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan. Located along the Silk Road, Gandhara became a major center not only for trade in goods, but also ideas and culture. The art of Gandhara shows a stunning blend of Indian, Hellenistic,
