About the Item

This is an old wooden work board made in Japan between the Meiji and Taisho periods. It was used by farmers to cut mochi, udon, and soba noodles. It was probably used on special occasions such as New Year's and when guests were invited, rather than on a daily basis. Farmers in Japan at that time did not live a wealthy life, and many people considered white rice to be high-class. Among them, udon noodles made from wheat, mochi noodles made from rice, and soba noodles were eaten on special occasions. The reason this board has a slightly whitish impression is because of how it was used. It is made of cedar, and it seems that this board was made by cutting a large cedar tree. In some cases, two or three boards are glued together to make one, but this is made from a single solid board. I think it is a little rare. This is why the wood grain is so beautiful. The gentle and generous grain of the cedar wood makes it feel like a painting when hung on the wall. As it ages, the wood becomes slightly uneven when you touch it, but I think that is also part of the charm of antiques. The boards are not significantly warped. Although it is old, I think it is in relatively good condition. I think this item can blend in with any space, whether it be a modern space or a Japanese-style space.
