Taoist dignitary statue or ancestor reliquary - lacquered wood - China Qing 18th
About the Item
Very beautiful Taoist statue in polychrome and gold lacquered wood. It is carved from solid wood, with hand-painted details and embossed ornaments on the clothing.
This Statuette may represent a Taoist dignitary seated on his throne, who would wear a traditional cap appropriate to his function.
The statue may also be a representation of the god of traders, who is missing an ingot in his hand.
Or the God of War Guandi, who is missing a sword.
The absence of attributes, due to the loss of hands, makes it difficult to precisely identify the god represented here. There are indeed several thousand Taoist gods.
In the Qing period, it was common for families to have portraits of the oldest people in the family painted or carved into ancestral reliquary statues.
This votive statuette could therefore be intended for a domestic altar: it represents an ancestor in a seated position.
The character is dressed in a dress with a wide collar and loose sleeves. The facial features are delicate, the drape of the dress is very well rendered.
The work of sculpture and ornamentation is magnificent.
