Carved wooden statuette of Guandi God of war & dog lion of Fo - China Ming 18th

About the Item

This marvelous polychrome carved wooden statuette represents a Buddhist temple guardian, Guandi or Guan Yu sitting on a Fo dog. The guardian and the dog are on a base whose feet recall the shape of the temples. The temple guardian has a peaceful and smiling face. He is dressed in armor. The dogs of Fô are the defenders of the God Buddha, Guardians of the temples, guarantors of the sustainability of the Buddhist religion. Their head presents, in a stylized way, features that are both leonine and canine. They are most often seated at the threshold of the temple. They are also called the lions of Fô. Divination of Guan Yu, historical figure of the Three Kingdoms era and hero of the History of the Three Kingdoms, Guandi is one of the most popular gods in Chinese religion. Raised to the rank of bodhisattva by Buddhism, he was established as a model of virtue by Confucianism, which saw in him the “holy warrior” (wusheng) matching the “saint scholar” (wensheng) Confucius. The woodwork is magnificent with great quality and finesse of sculpture, the draping of the costume in particular and the features of the characters give a superb rendering. Traces of polychromy. This object is a superb Chinese vestige. China, Ming Period - 17th Century
