Chinese Taoist Carved Wood Deity, Ming/Qing Dynasty, mid 17th century, China

About the Item

A charming Chinese carved wood figure of a Taoist deity, possibly for a home or personal shrine, late Ming or early Qing Dynasty, mid 17th century, Southern China. The unidentified Taoist deity has been nicely carved. His face grandfatherly face carved with jowls and wrinkles, and a sweet and warm smile that reaches his eyes. The Taoist master is portrayed seated upon a raised platform, his feet resting on a traditional foot rest. His He wears heavy, thick robes that drape and pool around his figure. He wears the headwear of a government official. The noble deity is carved from a single piece of solid wood, and was originally fully lacquered and gilt. Most of the original lacquer and gilt has been stripped away by time, though small areas remain. The use of red and black lacquer with the heavy gilding is typical of Southern Chinese workmanship. "Hong Kong" inscribed in ink to the underside.

    A decidingly charming Chinese polychromed and gilt cast bronze figure of Nanhai Guanyin, Guanyin of the South Sea, Ming Dynasty, 16th/17th century, China. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is portrayed here as a beatific figure seated upon a raised lotus pedestal over waves. Guanyin is dressed in heavy robes, and wears an elaborate headdress. The small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the headdress positively identifies this figure as Guanyin. Guanyin rests one hand in his lap, holding a cup of pure water said to be able to alleviate all suffering. His other hand is raised, holding a willow branch which is used to sprinkle the healing waters.
