19th Century Japanese Ceramic Coffee Pot Porcelain Arita style by Samson Paris

About the Item

A fascinating Japanese coffee pot and collectors item by Samson Paris. Material: Ceramic, porcelain Style: Japanese, Oriental, Antique, Baroque Origin: France, Paris late 19th century Mark: beneath the pot (see picture) Technique hand painted and crafted Made after the and in the style of the Japanese coffee pot which were originally made at the Arita Kilns, c.1690-1730. Although the original pot is modelled after a Dutch silver proto type, the decoration depicted is in the Japanese style. The pot has a slightly lobed pear-shaped body resting on its hexagonal base. It shows a decoration in relief in underglaze blue, overlaid with gold and iron red and green enamel. Above the spout a pine tree with a nest of young cranes, while the parents fly in with food. Furthermore, a prunus and bamboo have been applied to the pot. Together with the pine they form 'The Three Friends of Winter', a symbol for a long life. The large complicated moulded form is supported by three Japanese males that serve as legs.
