Antique Chinese Porcelain Blue&White Dragon Bowl Fu Gui Chang Chun Mark Ming 17c

About the Item

This exceptional blue and white dragon bowl, dating back to the late Ming Dynasty, is a remarkable piece from an unique period in Chinese porcelain manufacturing known as "官搭民烧" (Guan Da Min Shao). This term refers to the practice where official imperial porcelain was fired in civic kilns as a cost-saving measure to increase production. The bowl is exquisitely decorated with two five-clawed dragons, one with white eyes in reserve and one with dark eyes, intricately rendered in underglaze blue, as they contest flaming pearl amidst clouds and flames. The dragons, a symbol of imperial power and strength, are meticulously detailed, capturing the essence of their mythical grandeur. The flaming pearl, a symbol of wisdom and enlightenment, adds another layer of meaning. Adding to its significance is the auspicious four-character "富贵长春" (Fu Gui Chang Chun) double circle coin mark within the raised footring. This mark, translating to "Wealth, Honour, and Eternal Spring," further elevates the bowl's symbolic depth and cultural importance. The semi-translucent quality of the porcelain and the finesse of the underglaze blue decoration bear witness to the high level of craftsmanship, even during a period when production was being economized. This late Ming dragon bowl is not just a utilitarian object but a work of art that reflects the cultural and historical context of its time. It would make a significant addition to any collection of Chinese porcelain or Asian art. Comes with a modern carved hardwood stand. circa 1640, late 17th Century, late Ming Dynasty

This establishment, popular among overseas Chinese communities, particularly in Southeast Asia, became a hub for the creation of porcelain sculptures, often depicting deities, under the influence of renowned artists like You Zechang. These creations, distinct in style and highly revered, found a cherished place in the hearts of overseas Chinese communities, marking a significant chapter in the history of Chinese porcelain artistry.
