About the Item
This Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) storage jar is attributed to the kilns of Yunnan province, loosely decorated with iron underglaze in a manner typical of the region. Dated to the 15th/16th century, the small jar is potted to an ovoid form with a gently tapered base, sloping shoulders and a flared rim. The sides are painted with dark brown iron pigments to an abstract design of "horse eye" spirals, a motif thought to represent thunderclouds or shells. A thin glaze of celadon tone finishes the design, splashed across the surface and flecked with firing imperfections.
