Chinese Republic Period Book Form Porcelain Narcissus Bowl

About the Item

A Chinese blue and white and famille rose enameled porcelain jardinière in the form of a book, Republic Period, circa 1930s. The jardinière meant to serve as a bulb bowl for narcissus, a favourite flower of the Chinese during the Chinese New Year, symbolizing good fortune and prosperity. The planter itself rose on four squat feet, and decorated in a diaper pattern in underglaze blue, simulating brocade. Various flowers have been painted in overgalze famille rose enamels. The underside bearing a six character hall mark reading Duo Fu Duo Shou Tang Zhi (Made for the Hall of Abundant Happiness and Long Life).
