Collection of Four Chinese Ceramic Vases with Peachbloom Glaze
About the Item
An American Midwest collection of four small Chinese ceramic vases covered in peach-bloom glaze circa Qing Dynasty, 19th century, possibly earlier. The set consists of three vases of various forms and a beehive water coupe. Each features a delicate pinkish powdery glaze, known as Jiangdou Hong in Chinese. This particular type of glaze was almost exclusively reserved for small scholar tabletop items for the study and were cherished for the subtle color variations. Chinese scholars came up with three categories and various names for the specific colors and shades and even graded them with enthusiasm.
On all four vases, the copper-based mottled glaze of blushes of red is marked with green area (note around the neck of the water coupe) or dotted with scattered spots. This delicate visual effect desired by Chinese Scholars was due to that the copper oxide has not completely been reduced to red. One bell-form vase and the water coupe also display overall crackles and red deposit around the base. All four pieces were signed in cobalt blue on the base, with three marked "Made in Great Qing Kangxi Reign" in Kai scripts (1661-1722) and one "Made in Great Qing Qianlong Reign" in an archaic seal (1735-1796). They are possibly of the marked period but more likely made later in the 19th century.
