About the Item
Japan, Edo period - Meiji period 18th century - 19th century. Ebisu statue of the Seven Deities of Good Fortune made of ceramic with a height of about 12 cm.
Although there are chips and peeling over time, you can feel the beauty of its appearance that has passed through the times.
You can feel the familiarity and deep charm of the expression of Ebisu God, which has the origin of the god who was swept into the sea and appeared from beyond the sea again.
About Ebisu:
Ebisu is the only god in Japan since ancient times as the Seven Deities of Good Fortune. Since ancient times, it has been the god of fishing and the god of business.
Ebisu was worshipped as the god of the sea who brings good fortune from afar, the god of good catch, and eventually it spread to farmers and merchants, and became the god of business for merchants, the god of rice fields for farmers, and the god of good harvest as the god of mountains.
It is common to be drawn with a fishing rod in the right hand and a sea bream on the left side. It can be said that it is a god who expresses the belief in drifting from ancient times, who accepts what comes from beyond the sea, such as drifts that rarely appear, as a gift (good fortune) from God. Ebisu (Ebisu no Mikoto) was said to be the child of Izanagi no Mikoto and Izanami no Mikoto, the god of national construction, and he was washed away to the sea on a reed ship because he could not stand on his own even at the age of 3. After that, Ebisu no Mikoto appeared from beyond the sea again and became the god of commerce "Ebisu" that brought big catch.
