Islamic Pottery Bowl with Slip Paint Nishapur
About the Item
A deep and wide earthenware bowl supported on a foot ring decorated with slip paint from Nishapur 11th century under the Seljuk Empire (in nowadays Iran). This bowl features a thinly pottered wall covered in an ocher color slip background. On top of that, black, white and yellow slip paint were used to create geometrical motifs. A circled medallion in the center features a quadrifoliate design with hooked fiddlehead pattern lined with white dots. A broad band of similar repetitive design circumvents the rim of the bowl.
A nice patina and scattered flaking from the age renders this bowl a great antique appearance as the surface slip paint remains nearly intact. Under UV light, the bowl appears structurally wholesome and not restored from fragment. Only a very small area on the exterior wall shows in-paint.
Several Nishapur bowls with a various slip decorative motifs are in the Al-Sabah Collection of Kuwait National Museum and illustrated on page 219-227 in "Ceramic from Islamic Lands" by Oliver Watson.
