Japanese Imari Nanban Nesting Bowls, Set of 3, Showa Era, circa 1930s, Japan

About the Item

A wonderful set of three Japanese Imari Porcelain "Black Ship" Nanban nesting bowls, Showa Era or earlier, 1930s or earlier, Japan. The bowls wonderfully decorated in the Imari color palette of red, orange, gold, green, blue and black, with the "Black Ship" or Nanban design. Each bowl features five three masted ships - a large central ship , two to the cavetrto, and two to the exterior. These ships, often referred to as the "Black Ships", depict foreign Dutch trading vessels. The cavetto also features four pairs of Dutchmen dressed in 17th century clothing, and a large stylized chrysanthemum leaf and flower design, all against a geometric rhomboid diaper ground. The exterior of the bowls painted with alternating reserves of ships and pairs of Dutchmen. The Dutchmen set against a red background within a round blue frame. Large scrolls of peony blossoms fill the space between the reserves. The rims of the bowls decorated with an overlapping cloud pattern outlined in iron red and gilt filled. The backs of the bowls with a wonderful large painted "kotobuki" mark outlined in iron red and gilt filled. Kotobuki (Shou in Chinese) is the kanji character for longevity. In Japanese it also has the connotation of congratulations. The three bowls of graduated Size, and meant to nest within each other for storage. Diameters of each bowl: Large 9.5 in Medium 8.38" Small 7.25".

    Wear consistent with age and use. In very good condition. The smallest bowl with a minute chip to the foot rim. No other chips, cracks or repairs noted. The gilding with minimal wear.
