Japanese Kutani Millefleurs Square Sake Cup, Taisho Period, circa 1920, Japan

About the Item

A fantastic small Japanese Kutani porcelain sake cup of square shape and decorated with a millefleurs pattern, Taisho Period (1912 - 1926), circa 1920, Japan. The small square cup set on a short recessed foot. The fine porcelain painted all over in stunning bright enamels and rich gilding in the millefleurs (thousand flowers) pattern, filled with peony, chrysanthemum, hydrangea, cherry, and other flowers. The rim with alternating cartouches of styled chrysanthemum (kiku) and paulownia (kiri) emblems (mon). The kiku mon is associated with the imperial family, while the kiri mon is associated with the government. The well of the small cup with a design of three minogame, long tailed turtles, symbols of longevity. The underside of the cup with a bright and bold stylized lotus petal design. A six character mark to the interior of the foot reading "Kaga-no-Kuni Kutani Zo", Kutani made in Kaga Province, written in gilt against a red and gilt decorated ground.
