A fine and elegant Japanese Satsuma tripod incense burner, koro, with pierced metal lid, signed Eizan (?) Meiji Period, late 19th century, Japan. The koro, or censer, features a stoneware body of slightly compressed globular form, supported on three short and squat legs. The wide mouth with a recessed metal rim, and topped by an openwork metal lid topped with overlapping chrysanthemum blossoms of silver repousse. The body of the koro finely painted with fan shaped cartouches. The fans in the foreground with sprays of blossoming chrysanthemum. The fans in the background with intricate geometric brocade designs. The shoulder of the incense burner decorated with cartouches formed as stylized chrysanthemum petals, and intricately decorated with geometric and floral brocade designs. These are a high quality pair of very decorative gilded hand enameled Japanese porcelain lidded vases which we date to the Edo period of the 19th century, circa 1830. Each vase has a baluster open necked shape and has been hand painted in an Imari design with varying shades of under-glaze cobalt blue, with over-glaze burnt orange, salmon and grey enamels. The decoration alternates around the central section with many flowers, buildings, fences and other motifs. The quality of the painting is high and there are border designs around the vases and the lids. There are no marks to the base. Overall a very beautiful pair of Japanese vases. Japanese Meiji period globular bottle vase. The vase of extremely rare form with small opening and a tight pinched neck with a large globular body upon a raised foot rim. Decorated extensively with scrolling on-laid silver around 5 scenes featuring figures, flowers and birds amongst foliage. Towards the base of the vase a strong cobalt blue glaze finishes the vase before meeting the foot rim. To the base an impressed Kinkozan blind mark. The Vase dating to the Meiji period (1968-1912). Notes The Kinkozan family have been associated with pottery dating back to 1645.
