Pair of Chinese Turquoise Glazed Foo Dogs, circa 1880

About the Item

A wonderful pair of turquoise glazed Chinese Foo dog statues- circa 1880. Foo dogs were actually lions, yet they resemble a Chow Chow and/or Shih Tzu (dog breeds) which led them to be called foo dogs or fu dogs. Foo dogs were originally displayed outdoors. These were guardians - found standing sentry in front of palaces, temples, and homes of the elite. They could be quite massive and imposing with their wide open mouths in mid roar. It was much later that smaller more portable ones were produced, including ceramic statues for indoor decorative use. This lovely set includes a male and female. The male (right) has his paw on a ball. The female (left) is pictured with a pup (her offspring). These are in wonderful condition.
