About the Item

Gorgous and very Delicate six-piece tea or coffee set made of Japanese Satsuma porcelain. Cherry, blue, and ochre colors predominate. The main motif features the goddess Kannon surrounded by Buddhist monks. Goddess of compassion, venerated for her symbolism of mercy and her commitment to helping living beings. Japanese Satsuma porcelain comes from the province located on the island of Kyushu. The history of this type of porcelain begins in the 17th century, when Prince Shimazu Yoshihiro invited various artisans to settle in the region. These artisans introduced different decoration and glazing techniques. During the Edo period (1603-1868), this porcelain enjoyed a great popularity and began to be quite popular both in Japan and abroad. It became a symbol of status and refinement, highly prized by the Japanese aristocracy and by European and American collectors. This type of porcelain has a smooth, creamy glaze, sometimes decorated with intricate hand-painted designs. The decorative motifs are usually human figures, natural landscapes, flowers, and birds. They can also be embellished with reliefs or gold and silver appliqués, which add luxury and sophistication. This set features the figure of a Japanese lady or Geisha, which can only be seen against the light at the bottom of the cups. The reliefs on this coffee set are hand-painted using the Japanese "moriage" technique. This technique requires considerable time and dedication, as layers of glaze are applied on top of each other to create three-dimensional effects. The technique began to be used in the 1700s and was used on Japanese pieces until the end of the 18th century, but began to be exported to the United States starting in 1880. Moriage was a favorite motif of the Japanese period (1890–1921), and Japanese manufacturers continued to use this technique until the 1960s. Gorgeous porcelain tableware from the Portuguese firm Quinta Nova, renowned for its fine porcelain. Its meticulously painted floral design combines warm tones of orange and green on a pearly white background, evoking a romantic yet contemporary touch. The edges of the pieces feature a wavy shape with a fine gold trim, enhancing their decorative character. The floral ornamentation, with intertwined branches and flowers in full bloom, recalls 19th-century botanical motifs, inspired by Rococo art and Victorian design. The balance between the gold details and the softness of the floral brushstrokes make this tableware ideal for a more classic decor style or a more modern setting. Stamped on the base of each piece. Early Japanese Satsuma Antique Vase
By Satsuma
Located in Atlanta, GA
An Satsuma ceramic stone ware vase, circa 19th century, around the end of the Edo and the beginning of Meiji period. In the form of a Classic garlic bottle whose prototype was from China, the white bodied piece is decorated with an early form of kin nishikide, the so called golden brocade, a palette of iron-red, blue, green, yellow, purple and black with golden highlight. The over glazed enamel paint shows a group of robed figures in a garden setting with a lion and three tigers. A transparent overall glaze shows very fine crackles. The design is relatively sparse with plenty of negative space in contrast to the Satsuma production from the late 19th century, when the trend became fussy and overly glitz, due to the influence by the perceived western taste for the export market. This piece may still be made for export but its pattern was more influenced by both Kyoto Pottery and the Kano school of painting compared to the export ware by the end of the 19th century onward to the early 20th century. It was believed by many that this was a result of Satsuma potters visiting Kyoto in the late seventeenth century to learn over glaze painting techniques. There are some age glaze crackles especially around the foot. The piece is not signed in keeping with the earlier production before Satsuma ceramics...
