Small Dish from Hatcher Cargo Decorated with Flying Horse

About the Item

Small blue and white dish from Hatcher Cargo decorated with a flying horse on a background of white florets on a blue wave pattern ground, mid 17th century. This dish was part of a hoard recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher from the wreck of a ship that sunk in the South China sea in approximately 1643. Approximately 25,000 pieces from that shipment were sold at auction at Christies Amsterdam in 1984, which Sam and Myrna Myers attended. They focused primarily on pieces from the transitional era, which took place between the Ming and Qing dynasties, and which ran from the beginning of the 17th century until approximately 1660. This marked a shift in Chinese ceramic styles as the pieces became more original, poetic, and more freely drawn than those made in the official kilns. This lovely and unusual dish has scalloped edges with a slightly everted rim, and is painted back and front with white florets on a blue wave pattern ground, the center with a flying horse galloping over the waves. The bottom of the dish has an encircled Xuande six-character mark. While the long sojourn in sea water has softened the shine of the glaze of this dish, it remains a beautiful cobalt blue. The delicacy of the drawing and motif make the piece stand out. Please note that this listing is for a single dish, and not a set (the other dish was sold). Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. There are some minor frits on the rim, and three chips (one very small) on the foot of the dish, visible in the photographs.

This is a hand painted 17th century, late Ming dynasty, porcelain Jar or small Vase which we attribute to the Hatcher shipwreck cargo, this piece being from the Wanli /transitional period, circa 1625- 1640.
