Tatsuzo Shimaoka Large Japanese Glazed Rope Inlay Ceramic Bowl

About

A large, heavy and unique ceramic bowl by Japanese National Treasure pottery artist Tatsuzo Shimaoka. This wonderfully glazed and colored work exhibits his signature rope inlay, cord pattern decoration technique. Was originally part of a set that included four signed/stamped cups by Shimaoka (please see photos) but cups have been sold separately. Shimaoka, who started as an apprentice to famed Japanese potter Shoji Hamada in 1946 before opening his own studio, has exhibited worldwide including North America, Asia and Europe. In 1996 he was bestowed the title of Japanese Living Treasure by the Japanese government. In 1999 he was awarded The Order of the Rising Sun. His work can be found in many international museums and collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London among others. Would be sure to stand out in any collection or setting. Dimensions of piece: 3" High, 11.5" wide, 11.5" deep.
