19th Century Chinese Luohan Bed

About

The rising popularity of chairs and other forms of elevated seating led craftsmen to adapt traditional cabinetry techniques to create the versatile luohan bed. A form of elevated seating that still accommodated mat posture, the luohan bed was used as both a place to rest and to gather with guests. This spirited 19th-century example has a finely-beaded railing with stepped panels, a tightly woven seat, and cabriole legs that Stand gracefully upon tapered feet. A uniquely Chinese furnishing, this luohan bed makes for an usual yet elegant addition to a living room or bedroom.
