19th Meiji era Japanese antique keyaki tansu wabi sabi urushi chest of drawers

About the Item

Product of Meiji period (estimate 1868-1912) - 2 tier Isho tansu (Clothing chest of drawers), Kanto style. Can use separated into two. Using fine Zelkova (Keyaki Elm) generously for more storage capacity. Single zelkova solid wood for the top board of both tier, which you can put the heavy things on it even when using two tiers separately. Decorative Iron hardwares catch the eye - the lock plate on the first drawer is missing, but we see it's one of the wabi sabi elements together with the rustic surface of the drawer front panels. The lock plate of one of the inside-drawers (behind the small door) is missing too. Made with traditional wood joinery, drawers inner reinforced by brass / copper nails. Finished with traditional Urushi lacquer remains partly, especially drawer front panels. Urushi on top board areas & inside-drawer panels (2 behind the small door) are remains well. Smooth opening & closing operation for all drawers & sliding doors. Drawer lock plates won't actually work as the lock parts (by age). Carrying handles / buckles are stable enough and still in use, but need to use with care.
