20th Century Chinese Limed Wood Low Kang Table

About the Item

Made in China, this table is most likely rosewood but has been polychromed and limed in the early 20th century constructed in traditional Chinese joinery fashion the table would have been low as sitting on the floor with mats was common and low furniture with raised platforms typical. The current surface decoration of painting and liming was done as a decorative element in the 1930s by westerners either in the far east or back in Europe as a way to modernize and lighten the form. The table's central apron is carved with a dragon to either side while the curved ends are also carved with more dramatic dragons chasing a flaming pearl in clouds. The legs and under apron are carved with flowers and leaves. All of this work is picked out in light colors of paint in greens, reds and yellows. Everything has then been heavily limed creating a pickled surface with a soft mellow finish. These tables make great coffee tables current interior schemes.
