Antique Japanese Edo Era (c 1860) Bodansu Personal Tansu Red Lacquer 24"W

About the Item

Available from Shogun's Gallery in Portland, Oregon for over 40 years specializing in Asian Arts & Antiques. This is a Bo-dansu for documents and personal items. This piece dates from the late Edo era c 1860's. Used for storing documents, money and other precious items it is made throughout of solid Sugi wood (cryptomeria). The hardware make them very highly regarded all over Japan for the quality workmanship and intricate details. Kodansu chest was a special piece used to store one's most valued items in this case the locking bar "bo" in front of the drawers makes this a bo-dansu. There are numerous lock plates but the locks have over time become inoperable and no key is necessary and no risk of getting locked out. This tansu has a red lacquer finish and all the hardware is hand forged iron with the burnt lacquer finish. This chest was well used and well loved and has a warm aged patina. It remains in fine antique condition and should serve well for another century or more of use. A great piece of Japanese history and an interesting and very solid and functional piece of furniture.
