This is an antique Japanese tansu known as a kodansu. this tansu chest was made and used over 100 years ago years ago in the late Meiji Era (c. 1910). The kodansu was a special personal chest and was used to store everything from letter writing accessories as well as money, documents and other valuables. This tansu chest is made of kiri (paulownia) wood case and interiors. It shows great care in the construction with hardened hinoki wood peg construction.
