About the Item

Available from Shogun's Gallery in Portland, Oregon for over 40 years specializing in Asian Arts & Antiques. This is an Antique Japanese Yonezawa Kimono chest or Ishodansu. This chest was made in the mid Meiji era (1868-1912) of red lacquered chestnut front and sugi (cryptomeria) interiors. Ishodansu were used to store precious kimono, obi and accessories. It features the distinctive hardware of tansu made in the Yonezawa region. This tansu chest is made with pegged-tenon open-mortise corner box joint construction. It has all its over 100 year old rich patina. All drawers move easily without binding. All hardware is hand forged iron with Mokkou (melon) style handles and Sakura flower detailed lock plates. Most locks are still operable with included keys. Forged iron side handles aid in transporting this chest even when fully loaded with possessions. 42" x 38" x 18" (width x height x depth)
