Chinese Low Painted Lacquer Table with Fish Chimes, c. 1900

About the Item

During winter in the colder provinces of China, life revolved around the kang, a heated brick platform that household members would sit or recline upon. Placed on top of the kang, low tables provided a convenient surface for dining, drinking tea, or playing games. This early 20th century example is ornately painted with floral scrollwork and decorative patterns atop a cinnabar red lacquer finish. The top is decorated with auspicious symbols, each carrying a different blessing: a large shou character for longevity, two bats for happiness, and four stone chimes strung with fish for joy and abundance. The table itself has a simple waisted form, with short cabriole legs and a scalloped apron. Additional dimensions: Table apron to floor: 4.5"
