About the Item

Crafted in the mid-19th century, this striking red lacquer cabinet was likely part of a traditional wedding dowry, bestowed upon the groom by the bride's family filled with fine silks, linens and other gifts. The cabinet has a clean-lined form, designed with straight sides, square corners and a simple, curved apron. The cabinet front is cloaked in a bright, cinnabar-red lacquer finish, now darkened by an aged patina and antique wear. A large, full-moon brass lock plate secures the double doors, decorated with an etched border of flora and fauna. Two elegant brass drop pulls hang below, shaped as flower baskets and etched with scholarly treasures and flowers of the four seasons. The front doors are set into wooden hinges carved with gilt florals and the upper overhang is embellished with gilt relief carvings of ribbon-clad treasures and bats, harbingers of happiness. A storied addition to the modern home, the cabinet offers ample storage with three interior shelves and two drawers. Minor warping to doors.
