Early 20th Century Large Doors from Shanxi, China

About the Item

These large doors originated from Shanxi province, China, and are approx. 100-120 years old. Made of Elm & Pine, the most unique part about these doors are the many signs that are affixed on it, do note that although the doors are antique, these signs are added much later on. Besides the actual door number and road name, the others are the many accolades that this family has earned. Starting from the red plate on the left, this was given by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government. The Chinese words translate into "family of glory", this was to given to the household as a member of the family had retired from the military, to recognise his contribution to the country; it could also had been given to the family if the soldier was sacrificed during his service. Next to it is a small blue plate which contains the house address. From here we know the exact location from where these doors came from: House no. 236, Jiexi Village, Dongzhang Town. With further investigation, we found that this is located in Yuncheng city in Linyi county. The small silver plate on the right literally translates to "Civilized Electricity Users", this was given by the county in recognition of their efforts to not waste electricity, this was most likely given in the 70s, when electricity was introduced to the villages. The big plate below honours the household in achieving 10 virtues, namely (from left): (1) love the party & country, (2) respect teachers and value education, (3) harmony at home & with your neighbours, (4) obey the law, (5) healthy children & healthy education, (6) change out of the old habits, to adopt new ways, (7) hygienic, (8) to adopt a scientific viewpoint, (9) commodity economy, (10) to make money through your own hard work. The iron hardware on these are mostly original, the colour is original too and finished with a semi-matte clear lacquer. Overall width = 157cm, height excluding the protruding hinges = 242cm. The height of the hinge on top is 13.5cm, hinge bellow is 3.5cm. Thickness of the door itself excluding the bars on the back is 3.5cm.
