Japanese Two Section Mizuya (Kitchen) Tansu, Meiji Period
About the Item
Two Section Mizuya (Kichen) tansu, Meiji period.
Handmade with Japanese hinoki (cypress), sugi (cedar) and zelkova (keyaki) wood with handforged metal handles. Top section has four small sliding doors and two large sliding doors with open work detail with netting behind. Under this are five pull-out drawers. The bottom section has two sliding doors with horizontal slats and a small door and a small pull out drawer next to it with four pull-out drawers below. The horizontal side slats work both as support and architectural detail.
Kitchen tansu functions as storage for dishes, culinary implements and other necessary objects. In modern use, they can be located in any part of the house.
