Late 19th Century Large Two Section Antique Japanese Kitchen Tansu

About the Item

Late 19th Century Large Two Swection Antique Japanese Kitchen Tansu A Kyoto Mizuya Tansu also known as a Gifu Mizuya Tansu from the Meiji Period (1868-1912) with its approximate age being from the 1890's to 1900. The wood frame is made of Hinoki (Cypress) wood and the drawer fronts are Keyaki (Zelkova) wood with the inner parts like the drawer backs and floor boards made of Suginoki (Cryptomeria) wood. It has an original wiped Urushi lacquer technique finish with Hirute style handles and individually cut slatted doors versus large wood panels with carved-in slats. Originating in the Kansai region of Japan (Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe) this tansu was used in a kitchen setting to store jars of water, cookware, cooking utensils and serving dishes. There is one long, fixed shelf in each section. The interior walls and shelves were stained a dark color after manufacture. The top section is slightly taller than the lower section, measuring 34 1/4" high including a small 1/2" high detail on the top front edge. The lower section is 33 1/2" high. Full disclosure: the front of the tansu, with it's beautiful original finish, is in good condition, showing light wear for a cabinet of this age. In the top section there is a chip above the second drawer from the left and the front of the second drawer from the right has an small inward warp. The tansu has retained all it's original ironwork. Please see below for notes on the interior condition. The cabinet is guaranteed to be authentic and as described.
