A Magnificent and Quite Large Pair of Hand-Carved 19th Century Chinese Rootwood Throne Chair/Arm Chairs. According to an article posted by the MET Museum, rustic rootwood chairs such as these were meant to suggest Buddhist and Daoist figure’s lack of attachment to earthly luxuries. Instead of depicting deities and important religious icons on sumptuous thrones, rootwood chairs signified the relationship between humans and nature.
