About the Item

Fine Set of Three Chinese Export Nested Lacquer Trunks Late Qing Dynasty, Circa 1900 This highly decorative and charming set of three nested trunks is a wonderful example of the export wares created in Chinese workshops for the bustling Western market at the turn of the 20th century. Each trunk features a lustrous, ebonized ground, lavishly hand-painted with gilt and polychrome scenes of idyllic landscapes, birds, and flowers. The rich, vibrant decoration is complemented by ornamental brass hardware, including decorative clasps and substantial carrying handles on the sides. The trunks are crafted from a lightweight yet durable composite material, likely a form of lacquered leather or hardened papier-mâché over a wood frame, which made them ideal for travel. The interior of the largest trunk retains its original Chinese retailer's paper label, a mark of its commercial origin. The clever nesting design was a hallmark of Chinese export furniture, showcasing the ingenuity of the craftsmen while being practical for both shipping and display. Historical Background & Context 🧐 By circa 1900, the "China Trade" had a long history of supplying the West with exotic luxury goods. Trunks like these served a fascinating dual purpose. They were frequently purchased by Western merchants, diplomats, and tourists in port cities like Canton, Shanghai, or Hong Kong to serve as practical, lightweight luggage for carrying home silks, porcelains, and other treasures. Once they arrived in an American or European home, their function was transformed. These utilitarian travel containers became fashionable and exotic pieces of decorative furniture. They were used for storage, as side tables, or simply as compelling conversation pieces that spoke of global travel and the romantic allure of the "Orient." This set is a tangible artifact from this later period of the China Trade, perfectly capturing the enduring Western fascination with Chinese decorative arts. Today, their versatility and visual appeal make them ideal for use as unique coffee tables, side tables, or accent pieces in a contemporary interior.
