Vintage Thai Howdah-style Meditation Chair
About the Item
Vintage Thai Howdah-style Meditation Chair, teak, lacquer, gold leaf, Mid-20th century. A highly decorative and ornately carved throne, evocative of the royal processionals of Siam. A sturdy construction consisting of four bowed legs to straddle the spine of an elephant, reinforced with a cross strut, three S shaped braces on each side and brackets. All to support a rectangular slatted platform with galleried edge, arm rails with lotus bud supports and a fanciful back support composed of two curvilinear struts replicating the contours of an elephant’s back, supported by four uprights. The exterior surfaces are carved in relief with floriform details, red lacquered and gold leafed. Two thin contemporary (used) silk covered cushions in green and brown included.
Minor restorations, re-leafing and other signs of wear by use, otherwise fine condition.
